Celebrating Independence Day in Wadi Sofia

Today is the celebration of Malaysia’s Independence Day. We have speech from the representatives of each country. The duration for each speech is 3 minutes only. Here the order: Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, India, China, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka. I am the representative from Indonesia. It is good to have a preparation with the students behind the stage. We share many things about studying, living in boarding, school, dreaming, and many more. We do have lot of stuff to be discussed later. Then, Datuk closes the celebration with awesome speech. The point is we have freedom to work hard better than before.

After that, Datuk shows us his private library. He had been collecting his magazine since he was in 12 years old. His first magazine is Time. Not only Time, he also collect other magazine, his notebook when he was in elementary school, and all good reads. Can you imagine? He did take care all of his collection properly.

Wadi Sofia: Weekend

29 Agustus 2013

In Wadi Sofia, weekend starts from Friday until Saturday. Because I have no class in Thursday,
I stay in the resource room to study the preparation for teaching such as lesson plan and so on. I also observe our friends teaching on different classes. I have another job, it is making the speech for the celebration of independence day next Sunday.

At the night we go out to buy Roti Tempayan. It cost only RM 1. If you buy with the beef curry sauce which  costs RM 2, it will be RM 3. The taste of the sauce is same with the sauce for Roti Canai. But, Roti Canai is made with egg while Roti Tempayan has no filling. I prefer Roti Canai than Roti Tempayan. But still, both of them is delicious hehe.

30 Agustus 2013

We have a vacation today. Start from Pengkalan Kubor, then pantai Sri Tujoh, the next is KB Mall and then Pasar Cik Ye.

We should just bought chocolate in Pengkalan Kubor. Because other things except the chocolate has higher price than those in Indonesia. The most lovely chocolate I bought in Pengkalan Kubor is Ferrero Rochero and Hershey’s. I supposed to bought the Beryl’s one. Since we've been planning to go to The Chocolate Factory in Kula Lumpur which produces Beryl’s, I cancel it.

The next is Pantai Sri Tujoh. It is the famous beach in Kelantan. I'm playing in then sand of the beach, drinking Lychee Ice, and enjoying the sea breeze while eating the shells.

After that we go to KB Mall. I use this chance to take our money from ATM. At first it was a failure although there are master card and cirrus written on the board. Then I try use the Bank Simpanan Negara and I success take my money. In KB Mall there are such things like Matahari or Hypermart in Indonesia. The Pacific is a KB Mall’s version of Hypermart and Fashion Outlet Store (F.O.S) is that of Matahari. I bought a very cute foldable umbrella in Guardian since I have no one in Surabaya. It is the red angry bird umbrella and it costs RM 8. Cheap ya, hehe. Then I’m falling in love with the lime top in F.O.S and I crazily bought it in RM 49. Kyaa. So far, KB Mall is quite good if the location of the surau is not suck. I spent half an hour just for struggling look for surau’s location that actually is out of the mall. The direction board is also can not be trusted. Sigh.

Then we spent the rest of the day in Pasar Cik Yen just for dinner. I’ve gone mad to go around this market since the price is so so so cheap then that in Pengkalan Kubor. Grrrrrr. In this market I bought nasi with ceker ayam, it is RM 3. So far this one day vacation is fun enough. But not that awesome.

Happy Independence Day, Malaysia
In this peaceful free day I start with running around the campus and enjoy the strong wifi since there are no people use it. I also bake my bread myself. I think that it is a very good morning to start a good free day hehe.

Wadi Sofia: Day Four

28 Agustus 2013

We have a schedule to teach today. Since we just stay here for only two weeks, we don’t have much time to experience teaching students who come from many different country. That’s why for today we do team teaching so at least we teach them twice.

Since the secondary four is IGCSE class, the materials we use to learn obviously taken from the IGCSE syllabus. For this meeting, the materials is very short. The topic is thermal energy transfer while the sub-topic is conduction.

We use Microsoft Power Point as media to explore the materials. We use concept attainment model and think-pair-share for this class since there are only few students. First part is handled by Dewa who describe conductor and insulator through experiment. Then it is me who explain the way vibrating molecules inside the solid transfer heat. Before the class end, we give them mini quiz conducted by Ety. So far, students get excited and understand everything we teach. But still we need to practice speaking English so it won’t be stuck in the middle of talking for both explaining and teaching.

Wadi Sofia: Day Three

27 Agustus 2013

We do an observation today. The class we’re going to teach is Secondary Four in Science Stream. So, the students in Secondary Four has to choose their major whether it is in Science Stream or Art Stream.

There are 8 students in the Class. All of them come from different country: Malaysia, India, Thailand, and Korea. All of them understand the way teacher speak and teach in English but it’s not the same for their speaking. There are one Korean boy and one Malaysian who don’t speak English confidently. Though, this class has good atmosphere in studying. All the students get along together and work hard in studying together with teacher.

The class is facilitated by the air conditioner, fan, book case, white board, cleaning equipments, and notice board. Notice board is full-filled by the organization chart, cleaning duty time table, and the lesson schedule. The most attractive one is papers filled by students dream, passion, and what they think about themselves

Class starts with the greeting of the student. Teacher then review the previous materials before the lesson begin. Teacher named Madam Khamsana who is our mentor often teach using illustration which is made by herself on the board. Since Madam Khamsana is Singaporean and she is graduated from the qualified university in Singapore, she can handle the teaching process in English very well with the students. The most outstanding student who master in speaking English come from India called Nidha and Malaysia called Yusran. There is also a student who always curious and has high criticize into what teacher share. She is Amy. She is very bright and confident in speaking English even though her English is not fluently enough. Overall the class goes smooth. The students ask the logical question, the teacher made a conclusion together with the student as we do in Indonesia. In the end of class, student must submit their IGCSE exam’s exercise to the teacher as their preparation for the real examination.
